| Shark Fin Reef consists of a formation of surface breaking rocks which slope gently down to the sandy bottom at around 38 metres. The dive site is scattered with underwater features such as boulders and rocks rising up from the sea floor. It is located at the south of the Similan Islands off island number three. Both hard and soft corals decorate this site and wonderous sponges seem to flourish here. Whitetip Sharks can be found towards the edges of this site in the deeper water, as well as Leopard Sharks. Also, keep a lookout for massive Hump Head Parrotfish, Napoleon Wrasse, large adult Cube Boxfish and large pelagics. Currents can vary here, but get it right, and it's a superb drift dive where you can leisurely glide over the reef with zero effort. |
Shark Fin Reef is a mixed dive site that offers just about everything. Swim throughs, coral covered walls and sandy banks perforated with small bommies and coral heads. Although there's plenty to keep you interested and occupied along the reef, remember to have a peeks out into the blue, or up to the surface looking for bigger visitors, that are often spotted here. |
