Liveaboard Diving: Phuket liveaboards offer the best scuba diving in Thailand

December 13, 2010

Liveaboard diving is probably one of the best scuba diving experiences any diver can have, and an excellent way to visit the best dive sites in Thailand.  If you’re thinking about some liveaboard diving, it’s definitely worth having at look at some Phuket liveaboards, which operate in Thai and Burmese waters. What could be better than being pampered with five star service on a Thailand liveaboard, being fed scrumptious mouth watering food until you almost burst, and enjoying some of the best scuba diving in Thailand?

When it comes to liveaboard diving in Thailand there’s a huge choice, and to make the right choice when you’re choosing your Thailand liveaboard there are a lot of factors that need to be taken into account. These factors include, but are not limited to:

  • Your budget. Are you after a cheap no-frills liveaboard diving experience where the diving is your main concern, rather than onboard luxuries and comforts? Or, are you after something that not only offers the best scuba diving in Thailand, but also has luxury ensuite accommodation and facilities to rival a five star hotel?
  • How many days and nights do you want to spend on the boat? Phuket liveaboards offer a wide variety of schedules to suit almost any scuba divers taste. Many Thailand diving liveaboards offer different destinations, itineraries, and varying lengths of trip, so having a good idea of what you’re looking for when searching for you ideal liveaboard will help.
  • What time of year are you going to plan your trip for? Remember, most Thailand liveaboards only run during the high season months of October to May. This is especially true for Similan liveaboards, but some Hin Daeng liveaboards schedule trips throughout the year.
  • When you’re arranging your liveaboard trip, remember that you must leave it at least eighteen hours until you fly. It would be a shame to schedule your return flight so you have to miss out on the last couple of dives on your liveaboard dive trip.
  • Remember to factor in any additional equipment rental costs and marine park fees. We always let our guests know these charges in advance so they’re not unpleasantly surprised with last minute expenses. All the costs and charges for all of our Phuket liveaboards are clearly marked on our website. It is part of our customer service policy to be 100% truthful and honest with our guests, which is why they come back to us year after year.
  • If you’re planning a Thailand liveaboard around Christmas or the New Year, booking as far in advance as possible is essential. Many of our Thailand liveaboards are fully booked at this time of year, months in advance.

So what would we recommend as an ideal Phuket liveaboard dive trip?

The Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are by far the most popular choice for all Phuket liveaboards. This is because the Similans and surrounding area offer the best scuba diving in Thailand. In fact, the Similan Islands are rated as one of the top ten dive destinations in the world. The diving is diverse, with a mixture of shallow coral reefs as well as deeper dive sites with giant boulder formations. Visibility around the Similans can often reach fifty metres or more, and with a year round water temperature between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius they are a pleasure to dive.

The liveaboard diving in the Similans offers varying lengths of trip, from as little and one night, to twelve nights or more. What we would recommend is a four-night trip. With a four night Similans liveaboard, the boat would visit several of the best dive sites in and around the Similan Islands and also jaw dropping dive sites like Koh Bon, which is usually a Mecca for giant Manta Rays, Koh Tachai, and the world renowned Richelieu Rock. If you’re booking a Phuket liveaboard trip through us, check the itineraries on our site to double check that the boats visit these superb dive sites. Richelieu Rock offers some of the best scuba diving in Thailand, with more Whaleshark sightings here than anywhere else in Thailand. Richelieu is also home to a massive diversity of other marine life. Most Similans liveaboards will schedule at least a couple of dives at Richelieu, because it is such a world-class dive site with so much to see.

Work out your budget and have a look at our full selection of Thailand liveaboards. We have many liveaboards to choose from which cater to all budgets and tastes.  Two of our boats offer rock bottom prices of B19300 per person, and even include all equipment rental, all Similan Marine Park fees, and hotel transfers.  To view these two boats click here and here. We’ve stripped these prices to the bone and they offer unbeatable value for money. One thing to mention about these “Cheaper” boats is that even though we offer them for such a low price, they are still very comfortable. These boats are extremely popular and early booking is advised. They are exceptional value for money.

If you don’t have time or the budget for a four-night trip, we can also arrange Similan liveaboards for just a single night where you can visit Koh Bon, or from two nights where you can visit Richelieu Rock. These trips are also very popular so early booking is recommended.

We can’t go through all the boats we offer in this article, but rest assured, we only offer the Thailand liveaboards, and have taken inspection trips on all of them. If for one second we thought they weren’t good enough, or had any crewing or safety issues, we wouldn’t offer them. You can browse our full selection of Similan liveaboards to have you decide which boat is best for you.

Hin Daeng and the Southern Dive Sites

Trips to these Thai dive sites are usually for two or three nights. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are reputedly two of the best dive sites in Thailand, and have drop-offs to more than seventy metres. They attract a lot of big pelagics, and are two of the best places in Thailand to dive with Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. The Hin Daeng liveaboards also take in dive sites around Koh Haa and Koh Phi Phi, as well as a dive at Shark Point Phuket or Anemone Reef on the trip back to port.  Because these trips are only for two or three nights, they don’t cost as much as Similan liveaboards. If you’ve already taken a Similans liveaboard, think about a Hin Daeng trip. The scuba diving between the Similans and Hin Daeng is vastly contrasted with lots of different marine life to be encountered.

Contact us if you have any questions at all or are looking for a Hin Daeng liveaboard. You just need to give us your rough dates, budget and tastes, and we’ll come back to you immediately with some options of different Phuket liveaboards for you to choose from. We specialize in liveaboard diving in Thailand, and our guests come back to us again and again because of our excellent customer service and unbeatable prices.
