The veteran Similans Islands liveaboard MV Scubacat operated a private Similans charter in April 2010. I went along as a personal underwater videographer to make a Similans dive video for the guests. The MV Scubacat is without doubt the most spacious Similans liveaboards cruising the islands. The dive deck is huge and there’s enough room for more than 20 divers to gear up at the same time. The downstairs layout of the boat is well planned with both an inside lounge and dining area, as well as an outside dining and social area with enough room to swing several cats. Evenings are usually spent sitting outside chatting over a few cold beers.

The MV Scubacat is a budget liveaboard. The sleeping accommodation although comfortable is far from luxurious. Each bunk has its own personal fan to keep guests cool, and most cabins have electricity points. All cabins are twin share and have large windows with great ocean views. The sundeck is expansive and offers hammocks as well as sun loungers and tables and chairs. Sometimes guests choose to sleep on the sundeck under the stars, just because they can. Slowly falling asleep while gazing up at shooting stars trailing across the midnight blue sky can be pretty cool.

Five dives a day are scheduled from Scubacat liveaboard including a night dive. Guests can stay for as many nights as they like with a minimum of one night. The boat stays in the Similans from November till April and guests are ferried to and from the liveaboard by transfer boats. Guests can join or leave the boat every day of the week. The MV Scubacat travels all

around the Similans offering divers different dive sites everyday. She’s a very stable boat so an excellent choice for guests who might suffer from seasickness, or with divers traveling with their non-diving partner or families. Kayaks are available free of charge and there are opportunities everyday to visit beaches around the Similan Islands. The food is excellent. The Thai chefs prepare mouth watering dishes of both Thai and western fare. This is some of the best food served in the Similans, and meals or snacks are served after every dive.
