PADI Rescue Diver Course - What's Involved?

The PADI Rescue Diver Course is structured into three areas:

  • Knowledge Development
  • Rescue Training Sessions
  • Open Water Rescue Scenarios
Knowledge Development
In knowledge development you will learn the principles, theories and concepts that you will utilize during the course. You will complete knowledge development through a combination of reading the PADI Rescue Diver manual, watching the PADI Rescue Diver video and completing the knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter. Each of the five knowledge development sections has a corresponding video, and a matching chapter and knowledge review in the PADI Rescue Diver manual. You complete the knowledge reviews for the most part by reading each chapter first, but you can also use the information you learn from the videos. Your instructor will go through your completed reviews with you in the classroom, help to fill in any gaps you may have and also elaborate on anything you may have had difficulty understanding.

After you have completed the five knowledge development sections you will take the PADI Rescue Diver exam. In the exam, you will need to achieve a score of 75% or higher. The exam questions are all multiple choice. The exam isn't difficult, as all the answers will still be very fresh in your head from the knowledge development sessions. In the unlikely event you should score less than 75% in the exam, your instructor will go through any incorrect answers with you and address any areas of confusion. You can then retake the exam.

Open Water Rescue Scenarios

Now for the fun part! This is where all the individual parts of the course combine and come together. You will apply the principles you have learnt from knowledge development in the classroom, the skills you have learnt in the rescue training sessions and apply both of these to the open water dive environment.

As part of the PADI Rescue Diver Course, you will complete four open water rescue scenarios, conducted from a dive boat at some pristine dive sites around Phuket or Koh Phi Phi. Each of the four scenarios simulates characteristics of an emergency, comparable to what you could face in the local environment.

The four open water rescue scenarios you will complete are:

  1. Distressed Diver Underwater with Extremity Injury.
  2. Distressed Divers on the Surface.
  3. Unresponsive Diver Underwater.
  4. Unresponsive Diver on the surface, Exiting the Unresponsive Diver and First Aid.

Upon successful completion of the four rescue scenarios, you will be certified as a PADI Rescue Diver!
