When most people take that first step and take the PADI open water scuba diving course in Thailand, they'll usually carry on to become avid scuba divers and dive all over the world!

During your PADI Open Water Course, you will learn the basics of scuba diving, including scuba diving procedures, diving techniques and about scuba diving equipment. You will also earn the PADI Open Water Diver certification, which is recognized worldwide and is your international license to dive! You earn this rating by completing five short knowledge development modules, learning some essential scuba diving skills during five confined water training sessions and by making four open water dives from a dive boat on the beautiful coral reefs of the Andaman Sea.

The PADI Open Water Course usually takes only three days to complete. An extra day can be scheduled if needed. Maybe you would like to take a day off to just relax on the beach, or maybe your instructor will need to schedule an extra session in the pool before the open water dives? PADI Open Water Course - What's Involved?

The PADI Open Water Diver Course is structured into three areas:

Knowledge Development.
Confined Water Dives
Open Water Dives

Knowledge Development - Day One A.M

You will learn the basic principles, procedures and general scuba diving knowledge that divers need to know, to dive safely. You'll also need to have a desire to have fun! Several learning tools are used to teach you the basics of recreational scuba diving, including the PADI open water diver videos and manual, the PADI recreational dive planner, the PADI quizzes and the PADI final exam.

Each of the five knowledge development sections has a corresponding videoand a simple knowledge review answer sheet. You can simply fill these short answer pages out with the information you learn from the videos, or from reading the relevant paragraphs from your manual. Your instructor will also go through them with you in the classroom to help to fill in any gaps you might have and elaborate on anything you may have had difficulty understanding.

For the first four sections, there is a corresponding PADI quiz, each with ten multiple-choice questions. After completion of the quizzes, your instructor will check your answers and go through any questions you might have missed, or have an incorrect answer. The quizzes should only take about fifteen minutes to complete.

At some point during your open water course, you will take the PADI open water exam. This will be at your instructor's discretion, and could be on day one, two, or day three of your open water course. There are fifty multiple-choice questions and the pass mark is 75%. Your PADI Instructor will have prepared you thoroughly and the exam should be a breeze. After successfully completing the exam, your instructor will go through any missed questions or incorrect answers to ensure you understand any mistakes you might have made. If you score less than 75% on the final exam, your instructor will go through the incorrect answers with you and help you understand any grey areas you might still have. When you're ready, you can take the final exam again. This process can be repeated until you pass the exam.

Confined Water Dives - Day One P.M

You will have one session in the swimming pool which will be broken down into five separate confined water dives. This is the fun part, where you get to breathe underwater for the first time!

Scuba divers need to learn some essential skills in order that they can scuba dive safely while having fun at the same time. They also need learn how to dive in a controlled way, so they don't damage the corals and underwater environment.

Your PADI Instructor will demonstrate how to perform all the scuba diving skills you will be required to learn and execute successfully, before you can move onto the open water dives. Because all these skills are practiced in shallow water, should at any time you not feel comfortable, you can simply stand up or swim to the surface.

The skills you will practice in the swimming pool, will include tasks like getting used to breathing both on the surface and underwater through your regulator, clearing water out of your regulator, recovering your regulator if it gets knocked out of your mouth, removing and replacing your scuba equipment, sharing air from an alternate air source, clearing water out of your mask, some buoyancy skills and more. Scuba divers are aiming to achieve and maintain neutral buoyancy underwater, so they don't crash into the reef or float up to the surface.

The idea with the swimming pool session, is to get you comfortable performing the skills in a confined water environment, so you will feel confident and relaxed when you get to the open water dives. Should your instructor feel it necessary, an extra confined water training session may be scheduled.

Confined water sessions for courses run on Koh Phi Phi will be conducted in shallow water at the beach.

Open Water Dives - Days Two & Three

For many the best part of the PADI Open Water Diver Course has to be the open water dives themselves. This is where all the individual parts of the open water course are combined and of course, you get to explore some of Thailand's amazing dive sites.

We promise that if you decide to book with us, you'll be doing all of your open water dives, from a dedicated dive boat at some great dive sites like the Racha Islands or maybe Koh Phi Phi, at no extra cost to you! We don't try to save money by taking our guests to dive sites just off the beach.

You will apply the principles you have learnt from the knowledge development session in the classroom, utilize the skills you've been practicing in the pool and apply both of these in the open water dive environment. As part of the PADI Open Water Diver Course you make four open water dives off the dive boat, at some great dive sites that are teeming with colorful fish and marine life. There will usually be two dives each day.

Open water dives one and two are to a maximum depth of 12 metres. On the first dive, you'll just be getting used to breathing underwater, and relaxing. You instructor will be watching closely and giving you instructions and advice via hand signals if he/she needs to. He/she could be reminding you to stay close to your buddy, or just checking that you're okay. Your instructor will take you on an underwater tour of the dive site and introduce you to a host of critters that might include some Moray Eels, maybe a Turtle, or even a shark!

On dives two, three and four, at some point in each dive your instructor will find a sandy patch on the reef and ask you to perform a few of the skills that you already practiced on day one in the pool. After the skills have been completed, the underwater tour continues. Dives three and four are to a maximum depth of 18 metres. On completion of the fourth and final dive, provided you've already completed the exam, your instructor will congratulate you on becoming a certified PADI Open Water Diver and for finding an expensive new hobby!

The PADI Open Water certification is internationally recognized by all scuba diving agencies and dive operators, which means you can dive anywhere in the world down to a depth 18 metres, providing you take another qualified dive buddy with you on your underwater adventures! The certification lasts for a lifetime and nobody can take it away from you. However, if you don't dive for a while (a year or more), it's highly recommended that you take a PADI Scuba Review before re-visiting your newfound underwater friends!

The course price is inclusive of all materials. The price includes everything with no hidden extras. The price therefore includes equipment during the course, meals and refreshments whilst on the boat, a brand new PADI open water diver manual in your preferred language, all instruction from a teaching status PADI Instructor, as well as the PADI certification fee.

Minimum requirements for the PADI Open Water Program.

Minimum age is 15 years old. (Minimum age for Junior Open Water is 10 years old. Max depth 12 metres and must dive with either a PADI professional, or a parent or legal guardian)
Be in general good health.
Complete and sign the PADI Medical Statement.
Must be able to swim 200 metres and float for 10 minutes.
Be ready to have fun!
