- In many locations around the world, most "Boat Divemasters" are in fact Instructors.
- The Instructor level is the most common route if you are looking to diversify into other areas of the dive industry.

The PADI IDC - What to Expect? The PADI IDC is structured into two key areas: - The PADI Assistant Instructor Course (AI)
- The Open Water Scuba Instructor Program (OWSI)
Combined together these two programs make up the full IDC, which is then followed by: The PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) Course Prior to the beginning of your PADI IDC, you'll need to complete sixteen independent study knowledge reviews in your Instructor Candidate Workbook. This gives you a general idea of basic standards as well as background information which is essential for you to progress through the IDC. The PADI Assistant Instructor Course is the first part of the IDC and takes a minimum of three days. During the course, you will gain experience as a PADI professional whilst at the same time you'll learn about the PADI System of scuba diver education.
You will be introduced to teaching techniques for knowledge and skill development, which will give you the required tools to the finish the IDC and OWSI program. The AI Course focuses primarily on the duties and programs Assistant Instructors may teach independently while, adding to your skills as a dive professional. As part of the course you will study six topics through presentations and lectures. You will be required to make two knowledge development presentations, two confined water presentations as well as one open water teaching presentation. Your teaching presentations will be evaluated and you will be given feedback and suggestions for ways to improve and refine your presentation technique. You will also need to display competency by successfully completing a skill evaluation and by passing a PADI System, Standards and Procedures Exam. You can use the PADI Instructor manual for the exam so it's just a case of knowing where to find the answers in the manual. The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) Course The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) Course is the second part of the IDC and takes a minimum of four days. During the course, you will learn how to successfully transfer knowledge and skills to others by managing and adapting the PADI System of Education to individual student diver needs.
You will be introduced to the complete PADI System, the full range of PADI programs and the wide variety of PADI educational materials, teaching tools and materials - that are available to you as a PADI Instructor. The OWSI Course also concentrates on developing further your skills as a professional level dive educator. As part of the OWSI course you will study thirteen topics through presentations and lectures. Just like in the AI Course you will be required to make two knowledge development presentations, two confined water presentations as well as one open water teaching presentation. Additionally, you will also take part in workshops involving a Rescue Diver Course exercise and an adventure dive. Once again your teaching presentations will be evaluated and you will be given feedback and suggestions on ways to enhance your presentations. Of course, there's lots of practical skill development during the IDC, with several swimming pool and open water sessions. If there were any imperfections with the way you performed and demonstrated the open water scuba divng skills, your PADI Course Director will iron them out and hone them, until you can perform each skill slowly, with expertise and confidence. If you need extra time to practice skills in the pool, just grab a tank and a buddy when you have some time and jump in! The Instructor Examination (IE) After the IDC, to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor you must attend and successfully complete the Instructor Exam (IE). The IE is a two day evaluative process conducted by PADI Instructor Examiners. During the IE you will be evaluated on your diving knowledge, understanding of the PADI System, skills and talent at delivering teaching presentations in classroom and confined water and open water environments.
After passing the IE, you will be a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor! Dreams can come true and as a PADI Instructor you can now do things that others can only dream about! The ocean is your office and as a PADI Instructor you may conduct the entire range of PADI programs, from Discover Scuba Diving, right through to Divemaster.
