Elephant Head Rock Similans

Elephant Head Rock is so named, because the surface protruding rocks are said to resemble an Elephants head. The site is located just south of Koh Similan, the biggest and main island of the Similans chain, island number eight. Comprised of massive boulders and towering granite rocks, Elephant Head Rock is a fantastic dive. Valleys, ravines, crevices, tunnels and swim-through make this dive an exciting one. It's even possible to find a three and a half metre Nurse Shark sleeping in one of the many hideaways.

Currents can be strong here, but your dive guide will know the best routes to avoid strenuous fining, and to show you the biggest and most glorious swim-throughs. Keep your eyes peeled and scan into the blue now and again. Bigger visitors like Mantas and Whalesharks often make fly-by appearances. In the deeper areas of Elephant Head Rock, it's easy to find resting Whitetip Sharks and the occasional Leopard Shark. Of course, also to be found at this site, are the usual suspects like, Lionfish, Scorpionfish, Sweet Lips, Clown Triggerfish, Turtles and maybe even some Napoleon Wrasse. Rocks that upon first inspection appear to be fairly barren, will in fact on closer inspection, be home to a colourful spectrum of Nudibranchs and other small critters.

A deep dive with depths of 40 metres possible, it's a great choice for the first dive of the day. There's no mooring line here so a free descent is necessary. Sometimes there's quite a bit of boat traffic around this site so be careful when surfacing and remember to use a surface marker buoy.
