The training you receive in the PADI Divemaster Course develops your leadership abilities by teaching you to assist instructors with student divers and supervise dive activities. This will serve you well should you decide to continue your education and become a PADI Instructor! Many PADI Divemasters choose to go on to become PADI Instructors by sitting an Instructor Development Course (IDC). This is because PADI Instructors are the most sought after employees in the dive industry due to their versatility. The PADI Divemaster Course takes anywhere from between two to twelve weeks to complete. You may think this is quite a wide ranging time scale (and you would be right!) but it’s largely down to how self motivated you are as an individual. Most Divemaster trainees take around four to eight weeks to finish the course. The PADI Divemaster Course is structured into three areas: - Knowledge Development.
- Water Skills and Stamina.
- Practical Application.
Knowledge Development Knowledge development builds the foundations you'll need as a professional-level PADI scuba diver.
You'll study topics through a mixture of independent study, classroom sessions, and lectures from your PADI Instructor. There is a short knowledge review to fill out and complete for each section. Water Skills and Stamina The Water Skills and Stamina Module has three roles. Firstly, it confirms that candidates retain previously learned skills, allowing time for practice and redevelopment as necessary. Secondly, it confirms that candidates have the watermanship appropriate for someone working in a leadership capacity, developing these in candidates if necessary. Thirdly, this module develops skills so they are more suited to teaching, which is important both for a PADI Divemaster assisting with student divers in training and for progressing to the PADI Assistant Instructor and Open Water Scuba Instructor levels.
- In the stamina assessment you will complete several timed swims and other exercises to develop and evaluate your swimming skills and stamina.
- There is a diver rescue assessment that concentrates on refreshing and refining your rescue skills beyond the Rescue Diver level.
- The confined water skills assessment aims to improve upon your existing scuba skills, by polishing and developing them, so that they are of demonstration quality. You will be a role model for student divers so your dive skills will need to be second to none.
Practical Application The Practical Application Module allows Divemaster candidates to put into practice the knowledge and skills they will use as functioning PADI Divemasters. This module contains two segments. The first part includes required training exercises that all candidates must complete. These exercises develop the candidate's organizational and problem solving skills. Through actual or simulated activities, candidates develop and apply Divemaster skills under instructor supervision. The Internship options allow candidates to work with real students or divers. During Practical Training Exercises, candidates gain experience while simulating assisting and supervisory roles.
