PADI Discover Scuba Diving Phuket

PADI Discover Scuba Diving Phuket - You would like to try scuba diving in Thailand, but don't want to spend more than a day of your vacation doing it? People choose to take the one-day introductory scuba diving course for a variety of reasons. Maybe you haven't got time to devote three full days of your holiday towards learning to scuba dive, or maybe not all of the party you're travelling with want to learn to scuba dive? You can try scuba diving with no experience and it can still be completely safe as well as a lot of fun. Even children can scuba dive, as long as they're 10 years old or above. The PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) program introduces people to the wonders of scuba diving in a highly supervised and relaxed manner. By letting individuals try scuba for themselves, many of the common misconceptions surrounding scuba diving can be forgotten. In a closely supervised environment, absolute beginners learn basic safety notions, don equipment and swim around underwater enjoying the coral reefs, tropical fish, turtles and even sharks, all under the reassuring guidance of a professional PADI scuba diving instructor. The scuba diving in Phuket has a lot to offer all levels of scuba diver, from beginner divers right through to seasoned pros.

The one-day scuba diving course is aimed at those who have either never dived before, or those who have dived before but are not certified. No previous experience is necessary and you don't even need to be able to swim all that well to be able to experience the marvels of the underwater world. The idea behind the DSD program is simply to try scuba diving for the day and get used to breathing underwater. Of course, you'll be doing all this on a coral reef somewhere close to Phuket and will also be up close and personal with all the tropical marine life that the local reefs have to offer. The dive sites we'll take you to usually have visibility that can reach in excess of 30 metres and offer some of the best scuba diving in Thailand!

Discover Scuba Diving - What to Expect

  • Hotel pick-ups would be at around 7.30am for the transfer to Chalong Pier about 25 minutes away from Patong Beach.
  • The boat ride out to the dive sites takes around one and a half hours and during the journey breakfast will be served. Tea, coffee and water are available free of charge. Your PADI Instructor will use some of this outward journey time to give you a short dive briefing and introduce you to the scuba diving equipment you will be using. The briefing will include a thorough run down of safety procedures and all the other information you'll need to have an enjoyable, safe and environmentally friendly scuba diving experience.
  • When the dive boat arrives at the dive site, your scuba diving instructor will assist you in getting into your scuba gear and will check everything over and make sure everything is as it should be.
  • After inflating your buoyancy control device (BCD), your instructor will help you enter the water. This is as easy as walking into the water off a dive platform, which is only a few inches above sea level. Don't worry; you'll immediately float because of the air trapped in your BCD!
  • There are a few basic skills that need to be learnt before you can begin your underwater adventure. For these skills, your instructor will either take you into very shallow water at the dive site, possibly close to a beach, or use a buoy line where swimming pool like conditions can be safely simulated. Your PADI Instructor will have already explained how to perform the three scuba diving skills necessary and in the water will demonstrate them for you slowly then asking for you to repeat them. The skills you will need to learn and execute are:

1.       Clear a flooded regulator underwater. This is a simple skill. After your instructor demonstrates the skill first so you can see exactly how its done, you'll be asked to remove your regulator underwater, replace it in your mouth, clear any water inside it, and continue breathing normally. To clear the regulator, you can either just put it back in your mouth and blow hard, or put it back in your mouth and use the regulator purge button on the front of your regulator. The air being blown into it, forces any water out so you can continue to breath normally. The value of learning this skill is, if for any reason you take you regulator out of your mouth underwater, you will be able to safely clear it and continue breathing. Your instructor will stress to you before this skill, that whenever you take the regulator out of your mouth you must blow small bubbles. This is because scuba divers should breathe continuously and never hold their breath. In fact, never holding your breath underwater is the most important safety rule scuba divers will ever learn!

2.       Recover your regulator underwater. Your instructor will show you how to find your regulator underwater. This could be important if another diver accidentally knocks it out of your mouth. All you need to do, is lean to the right, sweep your arm behind you brushing against your scuba tank, bring your arm all the way round to the front and your regulator hose should be laying draped over your arm. From there you can easily find your regulator, pop it back into your mouth, purge the water and continue breathing from it. This skill is easier to demonstrate than to put into words here.

3.       Clear a partially flooded mask underwater. It's a lot easier than it sounds. All you need to do is let a small amount of water into your mask, hold the top part of the frame of the mask and exhale an entire breath through your nose while tilting your head back. This works because the air being exhaled from your nose, forces the water out of the bottom of your mask.  Then it's on to the best part of your scuba diving experience in Thailand, where you get to dive down to a maximum depth of twelve metres and see all the colorful fish and other inhabitants of the coral reefs. Your highly trained instructor will be very close to you the whole time, so you will be very well looked after. You might start the dive in the shallows, or descend holding onto a fixed line. You will have been taught all about how pressure effects our bodies air spaces in the briefing on the boat ride out to the dive sites, so you'll remember to pinch your nose and blow every meter as you descend to equalize the pressure in your ears. It's similar to pressure changes you might feel when you are on an airplane that descends.

Your dive time will be limited by the air that you carry in the scuba tank on your back, but the dive could last as long as an hour, depending on how quickly you use the air. If you were to have a problem, or become concerned about something underwater, you could relax in the knowledge that your instructor will be there to problem solve and deal with whatever crops up. Even if you stay down an hour, we can guarantee it will seem more like twenty minutes, because you'll be having so much fun the time will just fly past.

After the first dive, you can enjoy a tasty buffet lunch on the dive boat, relax, snorkel, or do whatever you please. After lunch it'll be time to gear up and jump in for another dive supervised by your instructor. There is no need to repeat any of the skills, so you can get straight to where the action is underwater. A further third dive could be on offer for only B500 depending on the schedule. On a two dive day guests should arrive back at their hotels at around 3.30pm, and on a three dive day guests should be back in their hotels by around 5.30pm/

A holiday excursion to go scuba diving will probably be the most memorable day of your vacation!

It should be stressed, that the Discover Scuba Diving Program is not a PADI scuba diving course as such. Upon successful completion however, a PADI certificate of recognition will be issued, that can be credited towards the PADI Open Water Course. This certificate is valid for twelve months from the date of issue.

The PADI Open Water Course is the first step on the PADI ladder of scuba diving education, it takes three days and upon successful completion, certifies scuba divers to dive to a depth of 18 metres, without supervision from a scuba diving professional. The certification lasts for life. Please see our PADI Open Water Course section for more information.
